Jungian Seminars in Hereford

A programme of occasional meetings called The Jungian Seminars was started in 1998 in Hereford for those interested in the ideas of Carl Gustav Jung. The seminars, organised by a convening group of Jungian analysts, take place in Quay House, Quay Street, Hereford and are open to anyone interested in learning about Jungian ideas, and developing an understanding of analytical psychology.

A Jungian seminar comprises a talk by an invited speaker, followed by a discussion, and contributions from those attending are encouraged and welcome.

Sometimes there are themed workshops, where those attending can take a more active part. The aim is to give participants the opportunity to explore imaginatively and to reflect together upon the workshop theme.

The Jungian Seminars are of interest to those working in the caring professions, to those involved in artistic or creative work, or in religious or spiritual exploration.

Seminars normally take place on selected Friday evenings, and workshops on Saturdays at Quay House, 3 Quay St. Hereford HR1 2NH . It is essential to reserve and to pay your place in advance, because numbers are limited. A leaflet with details of the forthcoming Jungian seminar or workshop is available on request.

SOCIAL DREAMING MATRIX

Saturday 16th October 2010

10am - 1pm

(arrival from 9.45am)

hosted by

Fiona Palmer Barnes and Lindsey Harris

Our dreams carry not just individual meaning, but also apply to the larger context of the world in which we live. The purpose of Social Dreaming is to transform our thinking about the world through exploring our dreams. We will do this in a Dream Matrix by the use of free association, amplification and systemic thinking, and thus to make links and find connections between the dreams. Thus we hope to find the knowledge and wisdom embedded in our dreams. Social Dreaming is not concerned with individual dreams, but instead we will focus on what is shared among the participants’ dreams. The Matrix mirrors, in conscious waking life, the unconscious world of dream-work while sleeping. The dream, not the dreamer, is the focus of the work of Social Dreaming.

In a matrix, the participants sit in an open arrangement of chairs, narrate their dreams, and offer associations and reflections. After each matrix, there is a dream reflection dialogue where insights from dreams are linked back to our everyday world. No previous experience is necessary to attend.

Throughout human history, people have met together to share their dreaming - and learn how to use dreams to guide and inform their lives. This is well recorded, from archaeological evidence about hunters and gatherers who lived close to the land and used dreams to find animals or know which plants were safe, to contemporary native peoples, as studied by anthropologists. We dream about all the important initiatory experiences from birth to death, as well as in making sense of daily life. We are used to the idea that dreams represent a ‘Royal Road to the Unconscious’ in individual therapy and analysis. In addition, social dreaming activity is potentially as much a part of contemporary life as it has always been. It has been used by those interested in Jungian thinking for many years, and has also been independently developed by the work of Dr. Gordon Lawrence and his colleagues at the Tavistock Institute, London, and the Social Dreaming Group. It is a technique widely used in organizational development and management consultancy.

This event is hosted by Fiona Palmer Barnes and Lindsey Harris, both Jungian analysts and psychotherapists working in private practice in Herefordshire. Both have trained with Social Dreaming Ltd.
